Byzantine Paths, Forested Trails & Island Spirituality

Follow the footsteps of monks, farmers, and travelers of past centuries on this enchanting route from Chora (Andros Town) to Panachrados Monastery. A journey along old Venetian trails, through lush villages and historical landscapes, ending at one of Andros’ most significant religious and architectural landmarks.

View-to-Kypri-Beach-Andros

We begin in the heart of Andros Town, ascending through a series of historic settlements that unfold like a story: the elegant village of Lamira, the neoclassical beauty of Mesathouri, and the charming Ypsilou and Strabourgies, each draped in gardens and shaded courtyards.

The trail leads us into the green oasis of Menites, known for its abundant springs and towering plane trees. From here, we follow a beautiful shaded footpath through dense vegetation toward Messaria, once the Byzantine administrative center of the island. Time seems to stand still as we cross stone-paved lanes, small chapels, and cultivated terraces.

Next, we cross the arched stone bridge of Stichiomeni, steeped in legend — a rare surviving gem of traditional bridge architecture. A short but steep ascent brings us to the abandoned village of Petrias, where crumbling homes and dry-stone alleys echo the rural life of past centuries.

Our final stretch climbs gently toward Panachrados Monastery (alt. 500m). Built into the cliffside and offering majestic views of central Andros, this 10th-century monastery is a place of peace and awe. The wood-carved iconostasis, old manuscripts, and intimate painting exhibition speak of a living tradition.

The hospitable monks welcome us, offering a short guided tour and a rest under the monastery’s ancient trees. We enjoy a light picnic, taking in the view and the serenity before transferring back to Andros Town by vehicle.

The team is very thoughtful with you. Organisation is perfect. I really recommend Trekking Andros! Don’t hesitate
