A Journey Through Andros’ Hidden Green Ravine
Explore a little-known side of the Cyclades on this scenic half-day walking tour in northern Andros. The lush ravine of Frousseoi tells a fascinating story of how locals harnessed water in a land known more for its wind and dryness. The walk ends with a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of Zorgos Beach.

Our adventure begins with a short drive to the northern foothills of Andros, where we set off on foot to explore the verdant Frousseoi ravine, nestled between the villages of Ammolohos and Palestou.
With your local guide, you’ll follow a shaded trail that runs along a gentle stream, discovering the remains of 19th-century watermills—once part of a thriving mill village that powered life in this remote corner of the island. At their peak, over 130 watermills operated across Andros, a testament to the island’s ingenious use of water as energy.
As we walk, your guide reveals the secrets of this rare ecosystem—springs, lush vegetation, and ancient engineering merge in perfect harmony. You’ll see mill ruins, old stone houses, and the clever irrigation channels that brought water to the millstones, keeping the community alive until the mid-20th century.
We pause beneath the trees for a light picnic, immersed in a green landscape that feels more alpine than Cycladic. A surprising and magical place where water flows and life once flourished.
After the hike, we transfer to Zorgos Beach, a wide bay with turquoise waters and golden sand—perfect for a relaxing swim before returning to the meeting point.
Arianas’ knowledge about the fauna and history of the old water mills was really interesting and my daughter really enjoyed the walk stopping en route to play in the crystal clear water. We finished our walk at Zorgos beach probably the best beach I have ever been to and enjoyed a swim and picnic. A really enjoyable day.
Thank you Ariana and Trekking Andros
