The unspoiled area of Andros

Walking Tour: Circular Route from Korthi Bay to Kapparia Village

Stone Terraces, Dovecotes & Traditional Life in Southern Andros

Step into the authentic heart of Andros with this circular walking tour from Korthi Bay to the traditional village of Kapparia and back. Follow old footpaths through fertile plains, pass historic agricultural settlements, admire Venetian dovecotes and slate-built houses, and return by a different trail for a full immersion into the southern slopes of Mount Gerakonas.

We begin our hike in Korthi Bay, crossing the kampos, a fertile lowland area shaped by riverbeds, stables, and farmland. The landscape is alive with gardens, livestock, and citrus groves, offering a living portrait of Andros’ rural economy.

The trail gently ascends along the Kapparianos River, bringing us to the village of Kapparia, perched at 240 meters altitude at the edge of the Korthi valley. The village consists of four distinct hamlets: Pera Chorio, Morakaioi, Megalo Chorio, and Tzeo.

Kapparia is notable for its impressive collection of Venetian dovecotes, stone towers used for breeding pigeons, dating back to the 13th century. These square, elaborately decorated structures are a rare legacy of the Latin lords who once ruled the area.

Here you’ll also see:

  • Traditional slate-roofed houses dating from the Middle Ages
  • Extensive stone terraces and dry-stone walls that hold the cultivated land
  • A quiet village café, perfect for a coffee stop and rest

After our break, we begin the return journey on a different trail, descending through the small settlements of Alamania and Agia Marina. These quiet clusters of homes offer more views into local life and unspoiled natural surroundings, as we make our way back to the blue curve of Korthi Bay.
