Through Verdant Ravines, Forest Trails & Sea Views

Experience one of Andros’ most refreshing and green hikes—from the mountain village of Arni to the coastal town of Batsi. This half-day walking tour explores the forested interior of the island, with shady streams, traditional settlements, and panoramic views of the sea.

Arni-Valley-Andros-Cyclades

We begin our day in Arni, a highland village at 500 meters altitude, known for its fertile slopes, abundant springs, and rich vegetation. The area around Kanavas Park is one of the greenest on the island, where plane trees, oaks, chestnuts, and walnut trees thrive in the cool, moist climate.

Arni has a long and interesting history: Arvanite settlers arrived here in the 14th century under Venetian rule, and their dialect can still be heard among the older residents today. The village exudes a timeless charm, shaped by its isolation and deep connection to the land.

Our path follows old paved mule trails, winding through three gentle hills covered in wild greenery. Along the way, we encounter abandoned farmhouses, hidden springs, and views that change constantly—from enclosed ravines to open sea-facing hillsides.

We descend toward Katakoilos, a scattered settlement with a river running through it. Here we pause for a light picnic and a rest under the shade of trees in the village square.

The final leg of our journey offers wide views of Batsi Bay. A beautifully preserved dry-stone trail leads us gently downhill toward the sea. As the scent of herbs fills the air and the blue of the Aegean comes into view, the transition from mountain to coast is complete.

A route of great variety and wealth of rural landscapes connecting central with south Andros.
