History, Villages & West Coast Views of Andros

This scenic hiking tour explores the rich cultural and natural heritage of Andros’ west coast. Walk from the valley of Gavrio to the seaside town of Batsi, with stops at historic landmarks, traditional villages, and sweeping views over the Aegean Sea.

Our adventure begins in the fertile valley of Gavrio, Andros’ main port town. We follow a narrow trail along the stream, surrounded by olive groves, watermills, and rural cottages—traces of the island’s traditional agricultural life.

Our first stop is the quaint village of Agios Petros (St. Peter), where we pause at the village fountain before making a short detour to visit one of Andros’ most iconic landmarks: the Tower of St. Peter.

Dating from the Hellenistic period (4th–3rd century BC), this cylindrical stone tower once served as a fortified watchpoint and refuge. Exceptionally well-preserved, it stands proudly above the coast, with views stretching to Gavrionisia and the Aegean Archipelago.

We continue briefly along a dirt road to reach the impressive castle-monastery of Agia, one of the island’s largest. Its Byzantine-style church, wood-carved iconostasis, and post-Byzantine wall paintings offer a quiet and spiritual interlude.

In the shady monastery courtyard, we rest and enjoy a light picnic before setting off again. Our final stretch winds through wooded paths and terraced hills, gradually descending into the seaside village of Batsi, a perfect place to end our walk with views of the harbor and the sea.

It was great fun walking in the countryside and the information you gave us was so interesting! Definetely we will come back
