Explore Northern Andros’ Ravines, Mill Ruins & Diverse Landscapes
Step into the lesser-known green side of Andros on this half-day guided hiking tour from the hidden ravine of Frousseoi to the coastal port of Gavrio. A walk through time, nature, and rural ingenuity, this route reveals a surprisingly fertile and water-rich corner of the Cyclades, where ancient watermills, mountain villages, and Aegean views all come together.

Your journey begins in northern Andros, at the entrance to the Frousseoi ravine — once home to one of the most important mill villages on the island. In a region known for its dry and windy character, Andros surprises with flowing streams and fertile valleys that once powered over 137 watermills, most built in the 19th century.
With your local guide, you follow the path along the stream, weaving through dense vegetation and the ruins of watermills, mill houses, and abandoned rural homes. Until the mid-20th century, these structures formed a self-sufficient community, grinding grain for the surrounding villages.
As the trail continues, the landscape opens up as we arrive in Amolochos, once the largest village of northern Andros during Ottoman times. With its scattered stone houses and layered agricultural terraces, it offers a glimpse into Andros’ agrarian past.
We then cross the high slopes above Gavrio, following a trail that gradually descends with magnificent views over the port, the nearby islets, and the deep blue sea. The hike concludes at the island’s main harbor town, where your walk ends full of impressions from a diverse and timeless landscape.
It was great fun walking in the countryside and the information you gave us was so interesting! Definitely we will come back
