Nature, Heritage & Hidden Waterways from Town to Trail
Make the most of your Andros holiday with one of the island’s most rewarding nature walks. This half-day circular hiking tour from Chora leads you through the island’s lush landscapes, historic sites, and natural springs, including a visit to a local botanical garden — a serene sanctuary celebrating Andros’ rare flora.

We begin in Chora (Andros Town), setting off along a coastal path beside Neiborio Bay. The trail gently ascends toward Gialia Beach, where a narrow river flows through a green gorge — a rare riverside habitat in the Cyclades.
Our first stop is Fabrica, an atmospheric abandoned watermill and pasta factory, once powered by steam and water in the early 20th century. It’s a striking industrial monument to Andros’ rural ingenuity.
Crossing the Leontos Bridge, we follow a shaded trail uphill to Stenies, a village of stone mansions, fruit trees, and gardens. Here we pause at the Bistis-Mouvelas Tower, an aristocratic home from the 17th century that speaks to the island’s naval wealth.
We continue through forested hillsides on an old stepped stone path toward Apikia, known for the Sariza Spring — a natural source of crystal-clear drinking water. Just a few steps away, we visit a local botanical garden, nestled within a restored 18th-century estate.
This enchanting garden showcases native and endemic plants, from Cycladic herbs to medicinal flowers, alongside ancient stone terraces, murmuring springs, and shaded sitting spots. A peaceful pause that invites connection with the natural rhythms of the island.
The trail leads us deeper into the valley, where we reach the Pythara Waterfalls, a year-round cascade surrounded by moss, ferns, and cool shade — perfect for a short rest and a refreshing breath of green.
Our return to Chora follows a different cobbled trail, revealing panoramic views of the town, its Venetian Castle, and the Tourlitis Lighthouse, perched like a sculpture in the sea. A perfect ending to a walk that blends Andros’ nature, culture, and seafaring history.
Andros is the greenest island I’ve been in the Cyclades and an ideal destination for nature lovers and hikers.
