Learn how to make Spoon Sweets

Lemon Spoon Sweet

Lemons and their blossoms are a specialty of Andros!

In Greece upon arrival guests can expect to be greeted with a series of traditional welcoming treats from coffee and cookies, to cakes and homemade liqueurs, etc. HOWEVER, there is one sweet in particular that has long been linked with the unique hospitality and welcome that is found in a truly traditional Greek home. This is the “glyko tou koutaliou” or “spoon sweet,” which is a type of fruit preserve whose roots are traced way back to ancient times.
These sweets are produced in the Greek countryside with each region having its own specific flavours. Lemons and their blossoms are a specialty of Andros!

Today we will travel back in history and learn about this important fruit for the local society.
You will walk through the orchards where you will experience harvesting a few lemons. After a short walk to the Megalos Potamos riverbed, you will end in the heart of the city at the restaurant “Skalakia” where Harikleia will introduce us to the magic world of lemons, using family recipes that have remained unchanged over the centuries
You will enjoy a fresh homemade lemon juice, lemon cake, and a Greek Coffee whilst you learn to cook lemon “spoon sweet”.
Join us on this memorable local gastronomic journey to the heart of Andros.

In Andros, lemon production is recorded as a strong component of the local economy since the 17th century. The Andriots were trading the local lemon to Smyrna, Istanbul, Romania, and Russia in a very systematic and professional way. Dating back to the 19th century Lemons were a trademark of the Island.
