Discover the Magic of Kea and Kythnos: 8-Day Guided Walking Holiday
Embark on this 8-day walking holiday through Kea and Kythnos and experience the Cyclades like never before Explore ancient ruins, idyllic beaches, and charming villages as you hike through diverse landscapes rich in history and natural beauty. Perfectly balanced between adventure, cultural discovery, and relaxation, this itinerary offers a blend of scenic trails, archaeological wonders, and authentic local experiences.
Kea: The Sophisticated Cycladic Gem
Kea, also known as Tzia, is the closest Cycladic island to Athens, yet it feels worlds away. Its unique blend of Cycladic architecture and lush landscapes makes it a standout destination. Unlike the barren terrain of many Cycladic islands, Kea is known for its verdant hills, oak forests, and ancient trails that crisscross the island, making it a paradise for hikers.
The island’s capital, Ioulida, sits amphitheatrically on a hillside and exudes timeless charm with its red-tiled rooftops, whitewashed houses, and narrow streets. The famous Lion of Kea, a 6th-century BC stone sculpture, is a must-see during a visit to the town.
Kea’s coastline is dotted with pristine beaches, from the organized Koundouros Beach, with its windmill-studded landscape, to the tranquil Otzias Beach, perfect for families and relaxation.
For history and archaeology enthusiasts, Kea offers treasures such as the ancient city of Karthea, accessible only by hiking or boat, where ruins of temples and a theater overlook the sea. The island is also rich in underwater wonders, including shipwrecks, such as the legendary Britannic, sister ship of the Titanic, making it a diving hotspot.
Kythnos: The Island of Simplicity and Serenity
Kythnos, located in the Western Cyclades, is a tranquil escape just a short ferry ride from Lavrio. Known for its unspoiled charm, Kythnos offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, traditional villages, and cultural richness.
The island boasts 65 sandy beaches accessible only by foot or boat, with Kolona Beach being its most iconic, a natural sandbar connecting two land masses. Kythnos is also famous for its thermal springs in Loutra, celebrated since antiquity for their healing properties.
Visitors can explore picturesque villages like Chora, with its narrow alleys and whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers, and Dryopida, known for its unique ceramic-tiled rooftops and the impressive Katafyki Cave, one of the largest caves in Greece. For history enthusiasts, the castle of Oria, perched on a hill, offers breathtaking views and insights into the island’s medieval past.
Kythnos is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous hiking trails connecting villages, beaches, and ancient sites. It’s a haven for those seeking a slower pace, where you can immerse yourself in authentic Cycladic life and enjoy local delicacies like sfougato (cheese pie) and siglino (smoked pork).
