An afternoon of local wines, shade, and quiet flavour.

Andros has a wine culture that surprises most visitors — a small but growing number of local producers working with indigenous varieties in a landscape that turns out to be ideal for the vine. For those looking for relaxed, sociable things to do in Andros without hiking, this afternoon experience is the most complete expression of what the island tastes like.

We begin at a local vineyard, where the winemaker guides us through a tasting of selected estate wines. We learn about the island’s terroir, the varieties grown here, and the story behind each label — and we choose a favourite to accompany the rest of the afternoon.

From the winery we continue to one of Andros’ hidden springs: a cool, shaded oasis beneath majestic old plane trees, fed by crystal-clear mountain water, with the sound of the stream and nothing much else. Here a traditional countryside picnic is waiting: artisanal local cheeses, cured meats, fresh seasonal vegetables, island capers, and other Andriot delicacies, all paired with the wine we chose at the vineyard. A slow, unhurried afternoon where the island’s flavours do the talking.
