A Walk Through Wild Nature, History & Panoramic Aegean Views

Walking Tour: Dipotamata Gorge – Upper Castle – Korthi

Andros Upper Castle
Andros-Route-3-to-Korthi-Bay

A Walk Through Wild Nature, History & Panoramic Aegean Views

This route offers a remarkable variety of landscapes and connects central Andros with the south, following one of the island’s most ecologically rich and culturally significant trails. The path leads through the lush Dipotamata Gorge, once a main thoroughfare now reclaimed by nature, and continues toward the Upper Castle before descending to Korthi Bay.

The Dipotamata Gorge (literally “two rivers”) stretches through a dense and vibrant valley between the villages of Syneti, Paleokastro, and Kochylou. This area, nearly untouched for over six decades, is a haven for wildlife, thanks to its permanent water sources and protected environment.

Along the gorge, you’ll encounter a series of impressive stone watermills, remnants of Andros’ pre-industrial past, and cross a magnificent arched bridge, beautifully preserved in the shade of the valley.

As the trail rises, we reach the Upper Castle (Epano Kastro) — a former medieval stronghold perched on a plateau with commanding views over the island and the Aegean Sea. This site, dotted with remnants of Byzantine walls and cisterns, offers one of the most spectacular panoramas on Andros.

The final stretch leads down to Korthi Bay, a peaceful coastal village framed by sea cliffs and long beaches. On clear days, you may even spot the dramatic rock formation of Grias to Pidima, rising just offshore — a symbol of the area’s natural drama.

It was great fun walking in the countryside and the information you gave us was so interesting! Definetely we will come back
