Walking Tour Andros Town to Dipotamata Valley & Upper Castle and to Korthi Bay

This is definitely the most popular route of Andros Routes hiking network

Discover one of the most beloved hikes on Andros — a route that seamlessly weaves together lush valleys, traditional villages, Byzantine castles, and sweeping sea views. This half-day adventure is a deep dive into the cultural and natural heritage of southern Andros.

Stone-Bridge-Dipotamata-Valley-Andros

Our journey begins in Chora (Andros Town), where we set off on a historic stone-paved trail that once connected the island’s fortified settlements and served as the main artery for trade and farming. The path leads us uphill, offering ever-expanding views over the island’s dramatic terrain.

Our first stop is the village of Sineti, known for its stone houses, mountain views, and local Folklore Museum — a lovely pause to understand Andros’ rural life of past centuries.

We continue into the lush Dipotamata Valley, one of Andros’ most ecologically important landscapes. This green gorge is home to a remarkable collection of 22 stone watermills, all scattered along the stream, surrounded by dense vegetation and birdsong. A paradise for both nature lovers and photographers.

From the valley, our trail ascends toward Epano Kastro (Upper Castle). Built atop a commanding plateau at 600 meters, the site offers 360-degree views of Andros and the Aegean. Once the largest medieval settlement on the island, the remains of Byzantine fortifications and cisterns tell stories of power, protection, and history shaped by wind and stone.

We then descend toward Kochylou, a quiet mountain village with sea-facing balconies. Here, we take a well-earned break at a traditional kafeneio with a view stretching down to Korthi Bay.

Our hike ends at the inviting shores of Korthi Bay (Yialos). Bring your swimsuit—there’s time for a swim in the crystal-clear waters before we return by car to Chora, full of impressions and island spirit.

A route of great variety and wealth of rural landscapes connecting central with south Andros.
