Sunset over an ancient tower with wine and island flavours.

The tower of Agios Petros is one of the best-preserved Hellenistic towers in the Aegean — over 20 metres of dry-stone masonry rising from a rocky cape on the western coast of Andros, where the sea turns gold in the last hour of daylight. For visitors wondering what to do in Andros on a summer evening, this experience is our most consistently praised answer — and one that genuinely delivers on its promise.

We begin with a slow wander through the sleepy lanes of Ano Agios Petros, past stone threshing floors, old fig orchards and the occasional cat stretched out in the last of the warmth. A shepherd’s path leads us down to the tower, where we arrive just as the sun begins to dip. The marble blocks glow copper. Swifts circle. The sea is very still.

Nearby, a rustic table has been set: local cheeses, caper salad, fresh sourdough, olives, and honeyed wine — a simple spread that feels entirely lavish in this setting. We eat, we talk, we watch the light change, and we walk back slowly under a deepening sky.
