Getting to Andros
Reaching Andros via Air Travel and Ferry Connections
While Andros does not have its own airport, travelers can easily fly to nearby Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) or Mykonos Airport and then connect to Andros by ferry, only by the port of Rafina
Athens International Airport
Athens International Airport is the primary hub for international and domestic flights in Greece. It offers an extensive range of connections, making it the most convenient option for international travelers heading to Andros.
Connecting to Rafina Port from Athens Airport
Rafina port is located just 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Athens International Airport, making the transition between air and sea remarkably simple. Travelers can choose from the following transportation options:
-
Taxi or Private Transfer:
Taxis and private transfer services are readily available at the airport and can take you to Rafina in approximately 20–30 minutes. This is the quickest and most convenient option, particularly for those traveling with heavy luggage or in groups. We can connect you with our transfer partner in Athens. -
Bus Service:
Direct buses from Athens International Airport to Rafina port operate regularly throughout the day. This option is both affordable and efficient, with travel times averaging 40–50 minutes.
Mykonos Airport
For travelers already exploring other Greek islands, Mykonos Airport serves as another viable option for reaching Andros. Located closer to Andros than Athens, Mykonos offers ferry connections to the island that typically take 2–3 hours, depending on the type of vessel.
Connecting from Mykonos to Andros
After landing at Mykonos Airport, you’ll need to make your way to the island’s main port to catch a ferry to Andros. Taxis, private transfers, and local buses are available to facilitate this journey.
While Mykonos offers a more direct sea connection to Andros, it may not be as convenient for international travelers due to limited flight options compared to Athens International Airport. This route is best suited for visitors already traveling within the Cyclades islands.
How to Get to Rafina Port from Athens
Rafina’s strategic location makes it easily accessible from central Athens or Athens International Airport. Below are the transportation options available for reaching the port:
By Car
Driving from Athens to Rafina is a straightforward journey that takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic conditions. The route is well-signposted, and ample parking is available near the port for those who wish to leave their car behind while exploring Andros. Renting a car is a great option for travelers who plan to explore the island more extensively, as Andros’ rugged terrain and secluded beaches are best accessed by vehicle.
By Public Transport
For those who prefer not to drive, public buses operated by KTEL Attica provide a reliable and economical alternative. Buses run regularly from central Athens to Rafina port, and the journey typically takes about an hour. Tickets can be purchased either from the KTEL ticket counters or directly from the bus driver. This option is particularly convenient for budget-conscious travelers.
Travel Tips for Ferry Passengers
- Arrive Early: Aim to arrive at Rafina port at least 30–45 minutes before your ferry’s scheduled departure time, especially if you are traveling during the summer when ports are busier.
- Pack Essentials: While ferries offer basic amenities, bringing snacks, water, and entertainment (like a book or tablet) can make your journey more enjoyable.
- Booking Tickets: Ferry tickets can be purchased online through operators’ official websites or travel agencies. During high season, early bookings are highly recommended to secure your preferred departure time and type of ferry. In your travel packages ferry tickets are included
