A cool green gorge, 19th-century watermills, and one of Andros’s wildest beaches.

Most people discover Zorgos Beach by car. We walk there. The journey begins in the green ravine of Froussei, in the north of Andros — a place that surprises everyone who visits it. A shaded trail follows a gentle stream through dense vegetation, past the stone ruins of 19th-century watermills that once formed a thriving mill village deep in this hidden valley. At their peak, over 130 watermills operated across Andros; Froussei holds some of the best-preserved. Your guide brings them back to life — the clever water channels, the millstones, the community that depended on them until the mid-20th century.

This is not a typical Cycladic landscape. Tall plane trees, running water, mossy stone and cool air make Froussei feel like a different island entirely — and in summer, that contrast is everything.

From the valley, the trail continues downhill towards the coast. The path narrows, the sound of the stream gives way to the sound of the sea, and then — suddenly — Zorgos opens up: a wide, wild bay of turquoise water and golden sand, with almost no one on it. We arrive the way the island meant for it to be discovered: on foot, from above.

Here, the morning is yours. Swim, rest, eat — the beach has a fantastic taverna for those who want lunch (not included, but very much recommended). There is no rush.

For those with more in the legs: an optional extension continues along the coast to Trypes, a dramatic rocky bay a short walk further along the shore — one of those places that doesn’t appear on most maps.

One of the most rewarding half-day hikes in the Cyclades, and genuinely unlike anything else on the island.
