Byzantine Icons, Sacred Relics & Panoramic Island Views
Step into the spiritual and mystical atmosphere of Andros through this half-day monastery sightseeing tour, discovering some of the island’s most important religious landmarks, Byzantine treasures, and awe-inspiring locations. With stops at four historic monasteries, this journey offers both cultural enrichment and a peaceful connection to the island’s sacred past.

Starting from Batsi, our first stop is the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, standing high above the bay and offering a panoramic view of western Andros. Though its foundation date is unknown, it became a monastery in 842 AD and has functioned as a nunnery since 1928. Inside, you’ll admire the Byzantine church, a wood-carved iconostasis, and stunning murals and icons from the 14th and 16th centuries, as well as a historic library with manuscripts and religious books.
We continue to the northeastern slopes of Andros, passing through the villages of Katakoilos, Arni, and Vourkoti, to reach the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas). Founded in the 11th century and renovated in 1760, this impressive structure is enclosed by high walls and holds a number of small chapels. Highlights include the relic skull of Saint Nicholas, the embroidered icon by nun Leondia (using her own hair), and a magnificent iconostasis. The view from here stretches over the Achla valley, river, and the Aegean Sea.
Next, we visit the Monastery of Agia Irini in Apikia, founded in 1780 and recently restored. The monastery includes a church and four curated exhibitions:
- The Kairis Collection on the history of writing
- A rare collection of traditional musical instruments
- The Minerals, Stones & Fossils Collection by Spiros Mpellas
- The Flora of Andros Collection by Elli Mandaraka-Stamatiadou
As we descend toward Chora, the peninsula of Andros Town comes into view—an ideal spot for a relaxing lunch and a stroll along the paved pedestrian alleys of the capital.
Our final stop takes us to the southern slopes of Mount Gerakonas to visit the Monastery of Panachrantos, perched at 750 meters elevation. Built in the 10th century by Byzantine emperor Nikiforos Fokas, this monastery offers sweeping views over Chora, the valleys, and the sea. Inside, you’ll see the revered icon of the Holy Mother (Panachrantos) attributed to Apostle Luke, and the skull of Saint Panteleimon, brought from Constantinople in 1705. The church’s Iznik tile-covered iconostasis adds a rare decorative touch.
