Andros, the way few ever see it
Leave the asphalt behind. Aboard sturdy 4×4 vehicles with a local guide who knows every dirt track, goat path and hidden cove, we head into the wild interior of Andros — places no bus, and barely any car, can reach. If you’re looking for something genuinely different to do in Andros — beyond trails and tavernas — this is it: a raw, unhurried look at the island that most visitors never get to see.
Two routes, two very different faces of the same island, both sharing the same ending: a swim and a picnic on a beach you’ll likely have entirely to yourselves.
North Andros Route — Beekeeping, Lighthouse & Wild Beaches: We meet in Gavrio and climb through remote farmland, oak forest and rugged hillside. Our first stop is a small family-run apiary, where we observe the hives and taste fresh honey straight from the comb. From there the track climbs to the dramatic Fassa Lighthouse, perched on wind-carved cliffs above the Aegean, before descending to a string of remote beaches accessible only by 4×4: Mikri Peza, Megali Peza, Pissolimnionas, and finally Zorgos — turquoise water, soft sand, and a rare sense of solitude. Start: Gavrio or Batsi | Duration: approx. 5 hours
South Andros Route — Gorges, Castle Ruins & a Wild Bay: South Andros trades wind for wild greenery. The track threads through deep gorges, past old watermills and through villages that feel a world apart, up to the ruins of a Venetian castle with a dramatic view over the southern sea. From there we descend to a quiet bay accessible almost exclusively off-road — no sunbeds, no crowds. A swim, then a picnic in the shade. Duration: approx. 5–6 hours
