Day by Day

Day 1

Arrival day and check-in at the Hotel. Welcome drinks and Greek ‘mezes’ in the evening, first meeting and some information about the program.

Day 2: HIKE & GET FAMILIAR WITH THE RICH NAVAL TRADITION OF the island.

Today we start our walking adventure with a short drive to Apoikia Village where the famous source Sariza springs. First stop will be the small  Pythara Waterfalls, a unique beauty area! The paved trail descends with destination Gyalia Beach and alongside the river we will cross a verdant landscape with oaks, olive and walnut trees, leading to a traditional restored olive press, the Bistis-Mouvelas Tower and Stenies Village, a seamen village. The route crosses the riverbed over the Leontos bridge, and after a while the path leads up to the Fabrica, an interesting derelict factory, which gave life to the area before the second world war, producing pasta using a large watermill, and later a mechanized steam mill. The footpath follows the river, traversing walled vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and impressive old mansions heading towards one of the island’s most important wetlands, Gyalia where we will rest, swim, and have a light lunch. We will return back to Hora walking. Evening Free.

Distance 8 km (Apoikia – Hora) walking time around 2,5 hrs.

Day 3: To the verdant Menites village

Today we will start walking from your hotel. A pleasant hike that will lead you to the village of Menites through the settlements of Ypsilou, Mesathouri, and Lamyra, passing through dense woods, old village-houses and springs, exploring this green environment and admiring the beautiful architecture of the old mansions, remnants of the rich maritime tradition of the island. Τhe hiking tour ends at Menites famous for its springs, an abundance of water, planes, and wall nut trees. A nice stop for a light lunch and then we will drive back to Hora. Evening Free.

Distance 7 km (Hora – Menites ) walking time around 2,5 hrs.

Day 4: Explore the Natura Area

In the morning you will get a transfer to a remote area of Achla Valley. Our walking tour will start from St. Nicolas Monastery. The trail follows a slope that borders the north side of the long, narrow Achla valley, nominated as a protected area of natural beauty. The bay at the end of the route is a beautiful unspoiled beach with dunes and caves, where the river estuary forms a small lagoon that welcomes both migrant and resident birds. A zone of absolute protection! A light picnic at the beach and on the way back if the weather permits we will return on a boat trip. Evening free.

Distance 6,5 km (St. Nicolas Monastery – Achla Beach) walking time around 2,5 hrs.

Day 5: Dipotamata Valley & Upper Castle

Today it will be an unforgettable walking experience in the ecologically rich area of the south, where nature is in perfect harmony with mankind and the past is still surprisingly present. Dipotamata is a small river of extreme natural beauty, crossing a long valley of environmental interest. The unspoiled area is a shelter to a variety of animals and birds. The most important structures of the area are the 22 watermills, which survived in the entire gorge. Our trail continues to the Upper Castle which offers the most breathtaking view of the island. It is situated on an imposing plateau north, at an altitude of 600 meters. The high mountains of the area are steep and give the impression that the rocks spring up at the top. We will continue to the traditional seamen’s village of Kochylou with an excellent view to Korthi Bay, where we will stop for our picnic and a greek coffee at the old local “kafeneio” of the village. Then, via a downhill cobbled trail, we will end up in Korthi Bay(Yialos). Enough time to swim and explore the town. You will get a drive back to your accommodation. Evening free.

Distance 7 km (Dipotamata – Korthi Bay) walking time around 3 hrs.

Day 6: Departure Day

Depending on your time of departure you will get a transfer to the port.
