The unspoiled area of Andros
Hiking Tour to Kapparia Village
Discover the authentic part of Andros
We start our hike by crossing the “kampos” (lowland), the area with the horticulture, livestock, and stables, along the river. Our destination is the settlement of Kapparia, located at the beginning of the fertile valley of Korthi, on a slope of Mount “Gerakonas”, at an altitude of 240m from where the Kapparianos River starts. It is made up of four individual smaller settlements from south to north: Pera Chorio, Morakaioi, Kapparia (‘Megalo Chorio’) and Tzeo.
A particular characteristic of Kapparia is the number of dovecotes, which date back to after the 13th century. Their construction is attributed to the Venetians and to the Latin lords of the area in general, who built them according to the square type common in their homeland.
The area is characterised by terraces on the ground, with dry-stone walls that hold the soil. The houses date back to the Middle Ages, and slate is used as a building material in all of them. After stopping for a coffee at the village café, we will return again to Ormos Korthi.
It was great fun walking in the countryside and the information you gave us was so interesting! Definetely we will come back
